Challenges for Hybrid Water Electrolysis to Replace the Oxygen Evolution Reaction on an Industrial Scale

چکیده

To enable a future society based on sun and wind energy, transforming electricity into chemical energy in the form of fuels is crucial. This transformation can be achieved an electrolyzer performing water splitting, where at anode, oxidized to oxygen—oxygen evolution reaction (OER)—to produce protons electrons that combined cathode hydrogen—hydrogen (HER). While hydrogen desired fuel, obtained oxygen has no economic value. A techno-economically more suitable alternative hybrid electrolysis, value-added oxidation reactions abundant organic feedstocks replace OER. However, tremendous challenges remain for industrial-scale application electrolysis. Herein, these challenges, including higher kinetic overpotentials compared OER, small feedstock availably product demand processes HER (and carbon dioxide reduction), additional purifications costs, electrocatalytic meet industrially required activities, selectivities, especially long-term stabilities are critically discussed. It anticipated this perspective helps academic research community identify relevant questions concerning

Effect of Morphology of Co3O4 for Oxygen Evolution Reaction in Alkaline Water Electrolysis

In this paper, three different morphological Co3O4 electrodes for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) have been synthesized. By comparing the three morphologies of Co3O4, the electrocatalytic properties show that the urchin-like spheres of Co3O4 electrode has relative low overpotential and good electrocatalysis stability, indicating that the structure of urchin-like Co3O4 spheres exhibit an easy OE...

Nickel Oxide/Carbon Nanotubes as Active Hybrid Material for Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Carbon nanotubes are of great interest due to their high surface area and rich edge sites, which are favorable for wide applications. Here, a simple and efficient routine is presented by decoration of multi-wall carbon nanotube (MWCNT) with nickel oxide (NiO) nanoparticles. The morphologies of NiO-MWCNT  were  investigated  by  using scanning  electron  microscope  (SEM)  and energydispersive X-...

The Common Intermediates of Oxygen Evolution and Dissolution Reactions during Water Electrolysis on Iridium

Understanding the pathways of catalyst degradation during the oxygen evolution reaction is a cornerstone in the development of efficient and stable electrolyzers, since even for the most promising Ir based anodes the harsh reaction conditions are detrimental. The dissolution mechanism is complex and the correlation to the oxygen evolution reaction itself is still poorly understood. Here, by cou...

Amorphous FeOOH oxygen evolution reaction catalyst for photoelectrochemical water splitting.

Reaching the goal of economical photoelectrochemical (PEC) water splitting will likely require the combination of efficient solar absorbers with high activity electrocatalysts for the hydrogen and oxygen evolution reactions (HER and OER). Toward this goal, we synthesized an amorphous FeOOH (a-FeOOH) phase that has not previously been studied as an OER catalyst. The a-FeOOH films show activity c...
